APED – Prompt 23: We Forgot How to Laugh

This poem was written for A Prompt Each Day, a daily dose of inspiration.  For today’s prompt – we were given a phrase (Chalk and Cheese) to inspire our writing.  I originally figured this was one I would pass on (as a phrase, it doesn’t work for me).  However, the words themselves right away reminded me of the cartoons my brothers and I watched as kids.  So, this is what I came up with.

Every weekend

We would sit

Tom and Jerry

On tv.

A typical

Cat chase mouse

A mouse that wins

And get’s the cheese.

Other days

We would sit

Laugh at coyote

And his dreams

He’d chase

The Roadrunner

He never learns, it seems.

line in chalk

x marks the spot

and then – it does him in.

All his traps

Set with care

But everything fails

He’ll never win.

Hopeless abandon

As a child

And fits of giggles

We would share.

Yet time has passed

And we’ve grown old

We have found

– to laugh is rare.
