APED – Prompt 53: Let Not the Sins of Man Before

This poem was written for A Prompt Each Day, a daily dose of inspiration.  For today’s prompt – we were given the quote below by Mahatma Gandhi to inspire our writing.  I hope you like what I came up with.

“You must not lose faith in humanity.

Humanity is an ocean;

if a few drops of the ocean are dirty,

the ocean does not become dirty.”

Mahatma Gandhi

Let not the sins

Of man before

Determine how far you can fly.

Let not the shadows

That darken your door

Cause you to break down and cry.

Let not the pain

That wounded your heart

Refuse to let you forgive

Let not the sadness

When you feel alone

Deny you true chance to live.

In spite of all the fear and pain

We’re the same – you can plainly see

But all the baggage we carry around

Refuses to let us be free.

Surrounded by a thousand men

And yet we feel all alone

We refuse to share our hearts

With anything less than a clone.

Let’s strive to join and share our hearts

For the hope of humanity

There is promise if we learn from the past

Arrogance must set our hearts free.
