A Week for Writing – Prompt 82: American Dream

This piece was written for A Week for Writing, a daily dose of inspiration.  For today’s prompt – we were given a a wordle – ten words to inspire our writing.  We are expected to use at least 3 or them.  I usually try to shoot for all ten, but sometimes the words just don’t fit the story I want to tell.  Instead – this poem used 7 of the words.

This is what I created.  I hope you like it 🙂

At first glance
she’s happy
She is the
American dream
Tight red dress
Seductive smile
Sun-kissed skin
An illusion
That she drowns in
For happiness
Is deeper than the
Paleness of her face
What does it say
When who she is
Airbrushed to perfection
Photo perfect
Yet empty inside
Too long she’s been
Trapped inside this skin
Where her life only matters
As long as she’s pretty and thin
And those that snap the picture
Know not true beauty
But they decide
What to show of her skin
What right have they
To perpetrate this lie?
To say her only value
Is the body she’s in.
