Collateral Damage

You hear it so often

the words of peace

in a song

in the lilting words

of a poet

or on a banner

held

by passionate soul

or by those who

rouse

the avid crowds

and march

the streets

in protest

or those who

strive in hunger

to speak

the words

that no one

wants to hear.

Why is it so hard

for those

who have –

to share

good fortune?

To guide others

on the path,

yet steep,

to hold

the hands

of those in need?

To find within

their stony hearts

desire for peace?

Instead, they only

understand . . .

that they want more

of what they have.

Everyone else

~ is just ~

collateral

damage.
